Cancun

We headed down to Cancun for a nice 5 day vacation. Finally I got my fill of the beach and that wonderful "do nothing at all" time. We stayed at The Royal in Cancun. It's a very nice all-inclusive place, the only problem was that part of the hotel is time shares, so you have to deal with a sales person when you first arrive, but we got out of that quickly and enjoyed our vacation. Everyone kept asking why we were taking this vacation and each time we said "just because". One of the customer service people at the hotel told us that we should always say we are there for an anniversary, so she took it upon herself to tell our floor representative and we got roses on our bed and in the hot tub along with champagne and cake for celebrating.

We did exactly what we wanted to do while we were there......nothing! Our days were pretty much the exact same, wake up, eat breakfast, sit by the pool for 4 hours (Nathan worked out), eat lunch, sit by the pool another 4 hours, eat dinner, go to bed and wake up the next day and do it all over again.

Two eventful things happened.
1. While we were eating lunch, we hear this loud crash, it sounded like one of the waiters had dropped a tray. But part of ceiling had fallen! It took out this huge section of liquor and broke a couple of tables. Thankfully no one was hurt or even that close to the falling ceiling. A pipe had busted in the ceiling and had been filling up with water until the drywall couldn't take it anymore. But the staff was extremely fast in cleaning it up. There was water everywhere, and within literally a minute there were probably 20 staff people (in rubber boots!) sweeping and moping as fast as they could. I was impressed with their speed to handle the situation.
2. Then about 30 minutes after the restaurant fiasco we were laying by the pool and hear this horrible screaming. At first you think someone is just playing around, but then we see staff and lifeguards running for the beach. This poor woman got caught in the current and it pulled her really close to this rocky area. The water was slamming her into the rocks and pulling her under. I can't even begin to describe the terror that was in those screams, something I don't want to hear again. Several people were in the water and on the edge throwing life preservers out to her and she was saved. But she walked about 2 feet and just collapsed. They ended up taking her to the hospital. From what we gathered from people talking, she just took in too much water and was very much panicked.

It's always fun to have stories to bring back and thankfully no one was really "hurt" but I could have done without the almost drowning lady. I also heard that the Monday before we were there someone did drown at the hotel next to us. Just crazy!
